Apple's new Leopard OS could stalk Windows

A Leopard is set to join the Apple family, the latest in a string of animal-named products aimed at taking a bite out of the competition.

Apple calls Mac OS X Leopard its biggest operating system upgrade ever. At $129, it's due in stores Oct. 26 and promises 300 new features.

Leopard, which replaces OS X Tiger, arrives as Apple is having a record year. Its stock has doubled in 2007, from about $85 a share in early January to nearly $170 now. It has sold more than 1 million iPhones, the year's most hyped and discussed tech product. And Apple's iPod business remains strong. New iPod units recently introduced include a video-capable Nano, a small media player that is the most popular in the line.

While much of Apple's attention has been focused on non-computer activities, Leopard is aimed at a core goal - selling more Macintosh computers. The new operating system has loads of new stylistic bells and whistles, with two notables:

• Time Machine automatically backs up files without your involvement and lets you "turn back time" to retrieve a lost file. It's different from other backup utilities in that with "a couple of setup clicks, you're done," says Apple Senior Vice President Phil Schiller. "Everything is automatic."

• Boot Camp gives you the ability to run Windows on a Mac. All you need to do is buy a copy of Windows software, and you can run both platforms on one machine.

Boot Camp was first introduced in early 2006 as beta software that could be accessed from Apple's Web site. Apple says it was downloaded 2.5 million times.

With the release of Leopard, the software will no longer be available as a free download. At any rate, Wolf Bytes analyst Charles Wolf says the broader audience of 100 million shoppers who frequent Apple retail stores will pay closer attention to an operating system feature than a download.

"Most Apple Store visitors are Windows users, and once they see how they can use Windows on a Mac, so many more will be switching," says Wolf. Apple's computer market share is 3 percent worldwide and 7.8 percent for the non-business U.S. market, says Roger Kay, an analyst at Endpoint Technologies. "Market share is clearly increasing for Apple. It's up 50 percent from the 2 percent Apple had from 2000 to 2004."

Kay thinks the idea of millions of Windows computer users switching to Apple with the Leopard release is just not about to happen. "You have to buy Windows, install it and hope it works," he says. "That's a cumbersome process."

Buying Windows XP or Vista will tack an additional $200 onto the price of the Apple computer.

Microsoft launched Vista in February, the latest overhaul of its operating system. It offers advanced multimedia capabilities and improved security but has left some consumers grumbling over upgrade and software incompatibility woes.

Mike McGuire, an analyst at research firm Gartner, says those kinds of issues are rare with Apple operating system upgrades.

"Vista was a whole new platform, while the Mac OS X platform was first rolled out in 2001," says McGuire. "It's been revived and enhanced since, but it shares the same core platform, so I don't expect any upgrade issues."

While Microsoft says Vista is doing just fine - about 60 million copies have been sold - several computer manufacturers are now offering the previous Windows version, XP, to consumers who prefer it.

"Apple has a real chance to play off Vista unsatisfaction," says Kay.
The lowdown on Apple's Leopard

• Price: $129

• Goes on sale: Oct. 26 at 6 p.m.

• Own a new Mac? If you bought a new Macintosh computer from October through the launch date, Leopard will cost you $9.95 (for shipping and handling).

• Buying a Mac? Purchasers of Macs on the opening weekend of Leopard sales will find installation discs packed with their computers. Pre-installed versions of Leopard will begin showing up on new Macs within days after the Oct. 26 debut.

• Have an older Mac? Apple says Leopard will work fine on most recent Macs. The minimum specs are 512 megabytes of RAM and processing speed of 867MHz. Entry-level iBooks and the since discontinued eMacs will not do well with Leopard, Apple says.

Computer-Based GRE® General Test to Include New Question Types in November 2007

Beginning in November 2007, two new question types will be included in the Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning sections of the computer-based GRE® General Test. Test takers may see ONE new Verbal question or ONE new Quantitative question or no new questions at all. No test taker will receive more than ONE new question. The new question types are part of the first phase of the General Test improvements that will be introduced gradually over time.

The new question types have been through extensive field trials, and the results indicate that they are functioning as intended. The GRE Program will begin counting these question types toward examinee scores as soon as an adequate sample of data from the operational testing environment is available.

Easy to see how to take the GRE

Every year students around the world take the Graduate Record Examination in order to attend graduate school.

The GRE is offered at many test sites in many different forms. Students can take the general test or the subject test.

The general test is in either paper-based form or computer- based form. While the computer-based tests can be taken year-round, the paper-based tests can be taken Oct. 25‚ 2003, March 13‚ 2004 and June 12‚ 2004.

Subject examinations are scheduled for Nov. 8‚ 2003, Dec. 13‚ 2003 and April 3‚ 2004.

Students interested in graduate school are encouraged by Western staff to look into the GRE.

"Many colleges and universities require the GRE‚" Career Services Director Al Waters said. "A very handsome number of our students look forward to graduate school‚ and many of them must take (the GRE)."

At Western‚ only some of the departments require the GRE for the graduate school program.

According to adviser Ellen Poulter‚ the English and journalism department does not require students to take the GRE.

"Different departments require different things. Some do (require the GRE). Some don't‚" Poulter said.

Many departments‚ however‚ do require the exam. Students should check with either their adviser or with the School of Graduate Studies in Memorial Hall‚ Room 237 to find out which ones do. Booklets and other information explaining the GRE can be picked up in the Graduate Studies Office. Students can also find information online at www.gre.org.

When students register for the GRE‚ the Educational Testing Service will send them free copies of GRE POWERPREP software and practice books.

The test costs money‚ just as the ACT or SAT did for high school students applying for college. In the United States‚ the general test costs $115 and the subject tests cost $130. However‚ the GRE board at Western Illinois University gives a fee waiver to a limited number of college seniors and enrolled college graduate students for one general test and one subject test.

To learn about eligibility requirements for fee waivers‚ students can contact the School of Graduate Studies or check out www.gre.org.

The GRE booklet offered in the General Studies Office (and in the University Counseling Center) also offers some test-taking tips for students.

It says students should pace themselves without panicking. Students should read the directions. They should skip difficult questions and come back to them later. Many other tips are listed in this packet.

Apple to Release Unlocked iPhone in France

Apple is releasing an unlocked version of the iPhone that will allow users to run it on various cellular networks. But you have to live in France to get it.

Under a just-announced deal, the European mobile carrier Orange will be the exclusive source for the iPhone in the French market. The unlocked phone is concession to a French law that forbids companies to bundle a cell phone to a specific mobile operator.

According to a report in the International Herald Tribune, Orange will offer both a locked version for its French net for about $560 and an unlocked version for a higher, but undisclosed price. Both are expected to be unveiled in November.

Apple recently signed exclusive deals, similar to the one with U.S.-based AT&T, with Britain's O2, the wireless division of Spain's Telefonica, and with Germany's T-Mobile, a subsidiary of Deutsche Telekom.

According to the Tribune report, Orange wouldn't say whether it had agreed to give Apple a share of the service revenues generated by iPhone users. This is one of the most striking features of Apple's move into the mobile phone market. The Tribune quoted a Nortel executive on how revolutionary this change is: 'For operators, having an handset maker suddenly demand a slice of their revenues is like being asked to change your religion,' said Gerry Collins, the director of strategic marketing at Nortel Networks, a Canadian company that makes wireless phone networks. "This is really a significant change for the industry.

From the outset, Apple's decision has come under concerted attack by hackers trying to unlock the phone's SIM card, thereby allowing the phone to run on a network other than AT&T. Apple has made a just-as-concerted counter-attack to undo those hacks.

Ubuntu 7.10 officially released

Canonical has announced the official release of Ubuntu 7.10 (codenamed Gutsy Gibbon), the latest version of the popular Debian-based Linux distribution. Ubuntu 7.10 includes the GNOME 2.20 desktop environment as well as recent versions of Xorg, OpenOffice.org, and Firefox.
Several significant new features have been added in Ubuntu 7.10. The Compiz window manager, which adds rich visual effects to the Ubuntu user interface, is enabled by default on systems with compatible hardware. Ubuntu 7.10 also includes support for display hotplugging and Bulletproof X, which simplify graphics hardware configuration and make it easier to use multiple displays. Other new additions include automated printer installation, support for writing to NTFS partitions, the Tracker search and indexing system, and a more energy-efficient kernel that will reduce heat output and extend productive laptop usage time.

Ubuntu 7.10 also includes some unique customizations to Firefox. A new plug-in finder service simplifies the process of installing a Flash player plugin and gives users the ability to easily choose between Adobe's closed-source Flash plugin and Gnash, an open source alternative. The version of Firefox included in Ubuntu 7.10 also has a Firefox extension installer that integrates with Ubuntu's native package management system.

Now available on computers sold by Dell, the Ubuntu Linux distribution is rapidly increasing in popularity. "At its core, Ubuntu is a free platform for delivering open source software, certified and guaranteed to work, and with each release we strive to enhance the experience of our strong and growing user base of over 6 million people," said Canonical Chief Operating Officer Jane Silber in a statement.

Ubuntu 7.10 will be supported for 18 months. The next version is Ubuntu 8.04, which is scheduled for release on April 24. Ubuntu 8.04 is a long-term support release, which means that it will be supported for three years.

New versions of Ubuntu Server and Ubuntu derivatives Kubuntu, Xubuntu, and Edubuntu were also released today. Ubuntu 7.10 is available for download from the Ubuntu web site. The servers will probably be under heavy load, so we recommend using the torrent, which is available on the Ubuntu 7.10 release page. We have been testing the Ubuntu 7.10 alpha releases, and will have a full Ubuntu 7.10 review ready in the near future.
